canon 135mm f2 astrophotography

Does the bright star reflection bother you? Some reviewers have listed lack of IS as a "Con". When i check a F stop chart, i see 15 stops if i count the main, and the secondary ones: 2, 2.4, 2.8, 3.3, 4, 4.8, 5.6, 6.7, 8, 9.5, 11, 13, 16, 19, 22. 8MP is plenty for the usual 8x10 or 16x20 portrait print. " Rokinon FE14M-C Lens. Imaging Resource 1998 - 2023. Click on following link to view images I put quotes around the ones that are written on the lens. (purchased for $700), reviewed October 9th, 2012 The interest of a f/1.4 is to be able to be perfect at f/2.8, while a f/1.8 or f/2 might need to be on f/4 to have the same sharpeness and overall IQ.They are not meant to be used wide open, except in rare moments. My copy has very stiff manual focus though and is quite heavy. We think it rises to the challenge. I would never shell out hundreds of euros for a 135 prime let alone one with manual focus. Also, the lens can only be operated when aperture is set to 22, wondering how I could use F2. So I sold it for nearly what I bought it for and chalked it up to a learning experience. Since Eric was so generous to share his images with me, I had to include his photo of the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex as well. Hi Thomas As far as I know, the Nikon D500 is not modified for astrophotography out of the box (it includes a built in IR cut filter that blocks much of the 656nm wavelength). etc.. Ron. This is perhaps because I'm more of a zoom guy (I have the trio of Canon f2.8 L zoom lenses, with coverage from 16mm to 200mm), and I didn't see that big a difference between my 70-200 f2.8 and my 135 f2except I could cover a lot more with my zoom than I could with a prime. It turns out that this. Now i have the f2.8 version, and while the resolution is better it s under no circumstance as good as the f/4 one. I would love to see his test images. To me it is a dead spot between 85 and 200. With weather sealing this would be a 10. It's a technical review about a couple of lens attributes. Lots of wet blankets around here. @juksu - you're such a hypocrite. I don't know about other photographers but I do not have many applications for this focal length. The Samyang 135mm F/2 easily lives up to its hype and should be near the top of your list of purchases if you are new or experienced in the field of astrophotography. Ironically all the sample images in this post are painfully soft. An update to the Mini 11, the new camera adds parallax correction capabilities, automatic flash control and a multi-function twist lens. I see that many commenters did not get what this lens can do. This free website's biggest source of support is when you use these links, especially these directly to it at Adorama or at Amazon, when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. I cant wait to try this lens out during the winter months on some wide-field targets in Orion. Find out what happens when Chris shoots some very expired APS film using old Canon and Nikon cameras. Include the Carl Zeiss in your research though, it might be an interesting lens for you, even if it is a bit pricey for what you get. In the highest contrast situations there's a hint of both purple and green fringing but both are minor and easy to remove with software. It's terrible. Asahi Optical's Pentax KX was one of the first cameras with this lens mount, acting as a midrange model in the lineup. I cant decide whether to clean it up in processing or let it be. Diffraction from the cheap EF-s kit zoom lens was uneven. I just purchased a very lightly used Canon 200mm F2.8L II USM for $620 from a great online dealer and can't wait for an opportunity to try it out with my Astronomik CLS clip on a T4i at a dark site. Take care not to confuse this lens with the 200mm F4 SMC Takumar 6x7 which has a different optical configuration, and which I have never tested. But again i am just at the beginning and i also do not want to use now a telescope. Of the 150 images I considered fit to publish, only 4 were made with the 135. $218.00 for 7 days. In excellent condition, this lens retails for around $200. Were those taken with the Canon telephotos you spoke of, and the full spectrum modified camera and the clip in filter? Can I assume that this article applies only to full frame & not to micro four thirds? Nothing just makes sense about the review -- the writer does not really understand the lens he is reviewing, very basic concepts are wrong. In 3 months I got loosy focus ring. This is so annoying that I intend to replace the Canon lens cap with a Tamron cap. I have never had a bad experience buying used Canon lenses from eBay sellers with 99.5%+ positive feedback. Latter looks quite professional.. Sharp wide open, wonderful bokeh, fast AF in dark conditions. Not only does the Rokinon 135 add additional reach, but I can also now shoot at F/2, instead of F/4 on the Canon. However, all the reviews were made by nature and sports photographers, and I would like to find out more about their performance in astrophotography. Yes the Samyang is good and yes there are lenses with bad bokeh. These lenses go about as close as you could get without a dedicated macro lens. I've tested some of the old Pentax 6x7 lenses with a friend. It could easily rival 'bokeh monsters lenses' at fraction of their price. Stage photography is another good use for the 135 L. For the rest there is Sigma 135 /1.8 Art also fantastic value lens. The 70-200L being a much more useful lens. Youll never have to worry about losing your position just by touching the lens, but you can always tape the position down to be sure. If they could make 135 f2 lighter version with AF for Sony and price is slightly under Sigma 135 /1.8 and obviously Batis 135 2.8 it could sell like hotcakes. So.. its like there is one F stop not being used by the lens..how do you know what click is for what F stop?? Got it! For some objects a reflection can take away from the photo because it covers interesting details of the object (Think Alnitak in the Horsehead Nebula). Its a joy to work with every time. My first shot was a section of the constellation Sagittarius that included the Lagoon Nebula, and Trifid Nebula. Focal length is great. Typical L construction. The extremes are 2 and 22. The few occasions I use a 135 FL usually are landscape shots (where I have no use for f2) and childrens playing (where I need zoom and fast af). The Bokeh includes as well all that is in the focus, but mainly talked about how it comes visible in out of focus areas. I would! By the way, I still enjoy using my very sharp Sears 135mm, PKA mount lens. FULL FRAME TELEPHOTO 135mm F2.0 The Sadr Region in Cygnus, including the Crescent Nebula by Eric Cauble. Bokeh is buttery smooth, best you can get from a 135mm. You can barely tell it's a pond.#3: Duck.Birds with bokeh are fine. It is sharp but somehow not that analytic way as a macro lens. I want to see the bokeh and the sharpness at 100% mag, don't care about the photos. 85 Is a different story, my 85 gets used a lot. Thanks for the fine article and the thought you put into it. Wonderful, smooth bokeh. Not rude at all, a fair comment. Because of some residual chromatic aberration even with the aperture stop, the best focus lies not where the star image is the smallest, but rather just slightly away from infinity, at the point where the star image barely begins to enlarge. My Rokinon 135F2 on my crop body is fun to play with.. a budget lens with budget construction on a discontinued camera system.. but hey im just a ham and egger https://flic.kr/p/21nj82V, I had a Canon 135/2 for a while, but I decided I preferred the 100 L used not as a Macro but a normal lens (which my non-L USM 100 Macro was quite poor for). I already did some trials with the Samyang 12mm lens. http://www.adstateagent.com | http://www.printradiant.com | http://www.hitsticker.com, I love this lens. But you are talking more than 2x crop (cut half by width and height) and that leaves you to twice smaller resolution == quarter of the Mpix count. So now your 42Mpix A7rII is only a 10.5Mpix. No rubber sealing against the camera body tend to give me the creeps when shooting in the wet. This new, affordable wide zoom for L-mount is capable of some excellent landscapes. The following image was captured by Eric Cauble using the Samyang branded version of this lens. We've combed through the options and selected our two favorite cameras in this class. Extrapolating from this, minimum recommended guidescope power is 120x for the 300mm telephoto, 80x for the 200mm, and 55x for the 135mm. You just panned the subject for his photos and then turn around and needle thematic for looking into Ericsson. thank you for that great review and also the explanations. This is a fully manual lens, meaning that it does not have autofocus, and you must manually select the f-stop using the aperture ring at the base of the lens. Some APOs can be fitted with pricey telecompressors, but those invariably result in vignetting and coma. Preaching to the choir! If canon puts an IS on this lens, it would be perfect! Try to have eyes and nose / lips all in focus. The CA is pretty low wide open and it rivals my 200mm L lens. You can use Stellarium to preview the image scale with the 135mm lens and your DSLR. The Rokinon 135mm F/2.0 includes a lens hood, lens pouch, front and rear lens caps, and a 1-year Rokinon manufacturer warranty. One very popular lens for bokeh fiends is the Canon 85mm F1.2it can produce extremely creamy out of focus backgrounds. However, stepping outside to polar align a small star tracker and attach a DSLR and lens is quick and painless. Please re-enable javascript to access full functionality. The focuser adjustment ring on the Rokinon 135mm F/2 is excellent, but fine-tuning your critical focus on a bright star at F/2 will take some trial and error to get right. Nikon 300/4 ED IF, Sigma 50/2.8 DG Macro (not a telephoto, but good). i also have the 300mm f4.5 non ED nikkor which is quite nice . Although your target audience is beginning DSLR imagers, much of your advice also applies to using lenses with CCD cameras. To achieve creamy bokeh, a lens should have a wide maximum aperture and a long focal length. http://www.radiantlite.com/2009/01/canon-135mm-f2l-usm-mini-review.html My goal for this article was to show some great example photos and share some ideas for projects this lens is a good fit for. The diameter of the lens is 77mm, with a non-rotating filter mount on the objective lens. Now - THAT's a lens everyone should have ;). Rokinon 135mm F/2 Lens for ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY. Which is the better buy? Sure, not all 135mm lenses are lightweightSigma's new 135mm F1.8 is rather heavy at 1130gbut if you look at the Samyang 135mm F2, which is pretty much flawless optically, it weighs only 830g. Have you ever come across this phenomena? Without the blurb I would have taken it as a 24 hour news studio shot with back projection or a cut and paste layer. The other stuff is really nice though. Can't argue with your reasoning, Juksu, about the framing of the article, but just stopping by to say I really liked that cat picture, am shopping for a new smartphone, struck that this type of photo is in another league - all newbie observations, of course, which sort of supports your thoughts that an article like this would be better framed as a "Love this new long lens stuff" sort of thing. As rest you do just by cropping or stitching. @juksu - you're such a liar. Photos posted are pleasing but I'd be into seeing something new. The focuser adjustment rotates roughly 270 degrees, meaning fine-tuning on a bright star is more precise. Cost. Photography is art and technology, the latter serving the first.Photography is not something arty with a lot of gadgetry. With a rounded 9-blade diaphragm, shallow depth of field imaging will be rendered with pleasing out-of-focus highlights. In the middle of the OM System lineup, the OM-5 promises yesterday's top-tier performance in a lighter, more compact body. (purchased for $900), reviewed December 14th, 2006 It could really use an update to its coatings. It is NOT extremely sharp wide open, it often requires massive AF adjustment on DLSRs (sometimes beyond what the body allows as micro-adjustment) and AF is not reliable enough to consistently ensure sharp focus at full aperture. (purchased for $1,625), reviewed January 27th, 2010 In photoshop I love to zoom 200, 300 and even 400% to see the extreme details it is an absolutely amazing lens, great backround blur, great for low light weddings with available light. One thing I am most stun is its AF performance. fast, sharp wide open, excellent bokeh, value for money, very fast, sharp, gorgeous background blur, world class lens. An h-alpha filter would still be useful for your D500, but much more so if it were modified! Prime lenses are typically lighter as they do not need the additional glass and mechanics required to zoom at varying magnifications.
