hello i too am from miami and had to learn about fishing here, this is what I've learned, right now for gags you have to be in at least 55+ feet of water because of the weather being so hot, thats at least 25 miles out and for aj I've caught them 17 miles out but the have no size the nearest spot that I've caught them big is around 30 miles out but a couple months ago i went there and there were nonewhen the temps cool down some then, it easier to catch gags in around 35-40 feet of water 17-20 miles out, i have never caught gags any shallower than that, i only fish the horseshoe steinhatchee area, this year though will be a complete different story because of lasts year red tide.
