We werent 100 percent convinced that we would get people [away] from the second screen and actually take the time and investment to watch whats going on. There are so many ideas and concepts out in the world, said Friese. Was that deliberate? That was the biggest structural issue: when do we reveal what? When you write, how do you plot things out? Friese: I completely agree. "To create worlds you need to create patterns, and the best way to create patterns is by using symbols," he said. Friese also warned viewers from making assumptions about certain characters, such as Jonas mother Hannah (Maja Schne), who has done rather unforgivable, selfish, and malicious acts throughout every timeline. Wrapping up the Dark story next season hasnt been an easy process, even though filming is already underway. It was one of those pictures youre drawn to, where you immediately start asking questions: What did he do with that hammer? What kind of trigger words do you use? Baran bo Odar Definitely. Did the actors all know about the ending? Then one day, I told myself: Lets forget about what theyre saying and listen to how theyre saying it. Go Behind the Cutting-Edge Technology of 1899. But we stumbled upon a picture of a man in a white shirt covered in blood, with a hammer in his hand and a really weird look on his face, standing on top of what looked like an old boat. A lot went down between the lifelong friends like, a lot. Friese laughed and added, "'For a short moment in time, you visited a parallel world where you actually had success!'". They said the most complicated thing was actually the logistics, scheduling when you can shoot what, how to get sets in and out and the reverse shots, all those sorts of things. When it came time for Martha (Lisa Vicari) to take on some of the some iconography that in previous seasons was associated with Jonas (Louis Hofmann), that exchange between the two main characters made for a moment that forced them and series co-creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar to recalibrate a little. It would have felt like selling our souls and not delivering on what we wanted to do [if we had more seasons]. How did the script work did you write in German and then have things translated? With all that in mind, they set out to make 1899, which follows the multicultural passengers of a migrant steamship heading west to leave the old continent, whose journey takes an unexpected turn when they discover another migrant ship adrift on the open sea. Friese says she was bothered by this for the first few months actively working on the scripts for 1899, but, "At some point, we just said, 'Let's shake it off.' That's what we tried to do. Sometimes on set, the actors would deliver a really great performance, but they used the wrong hand.
